Obituary for Joyce V. Becker (Vredenburgh)

Joyce V. Becker (Vredenburgh)
MECHANICVILLE, NY - Joyce V. Becker, 89, a former longtime educator, died Thursday, Jan. 25th, at Saratoga NY Hospital, after an extended illness.

Born in Spruceton, Greene County, NY, April 4, 1928, daughter of the late Clarence and Evelyn Vredenburgh, Joyce graduated High School from Hunter-Tannersville Central, received her undergraduate degree from St. Lawrence University and her Master’s degree from Syracuse University. She lived in Spruceton, the Saugerties area and, for the last several years, in Mechanicville.

Joyce taught school in Liverpool, NY, in Hawaii, and for most of her career at Saugerties Central School, as a high school math teacher, retiring in 1983 after 25 years.

After retirement, Joyce became a gifted quilter, sharing her work with family and friends. She also enjoyed calligraphy and was fond of bird watching, especially those bluebird families! In addition to raising her sons, she especially enjoyed looking after her cherished granddaughter Kimberly.

Sadly predeceased by her son Jeffrey A. Becker in 2005 and her brother Lauren Vredenburgh, Joyce is survived by son Mark and his wife Tamie Becker of Mechanicville, her sister Nadene (Keith) Willcox of Roseboom and children Nathan Willcox and Leah Carpenter, granddaughter Kimberly Joyce (Carlos Vintimilla) Becker and step-grandchildren: Zachary (Sarah) Conerty, Ryan (Janette) Conerty and Katelyn (Rick Hopeck) Conerty, along with great grandchildren Ivy, Keegan, Owen, Kayla, Addison, Quinn and Joseph, along with nieces and nephews.

The family is planning “A Celebration of Life” gathering this Spring, to be held in Saugerties NY, where she lived and taught for many years.

A Burial Service will be scheduled this spring at Spruceton Cemetery.

Remembrances may be made to a charity of one’s choice in fond memory of Joyce Vredenburgh Becker.
