Our Story

  • In the early 1970's, Tom Salvadore was asked to be a pall bearer for a friend's deceased family member.  After arriving at the Funeral Home much too early, he had the opportunity to sit with the funeral director while waiting for all to arrive.  During that conversation, Tom mentioned that as a policeman and a member of the local volunteer rescue squad in Mechanicville, he had encountered many deceased persons in both those capacities, and that if this funeral director ever needed some help, just call.  To make a long story shorter, he was called, and began his career in Funeral Service.  Encouraged to pursue his education in Funeral Service, while working the night shift as a Police Sergeant, Tom later graduated from Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, passed a national board exam to begin an apprenticeship, and a year later received his New York State certification as a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer.
  • After renting space to establish Salvadore Funeral Home for 9 months, Tom and his wife Donna bought the DeVito Funeral Home from John and Mary DeVito, at its present location,  39 South Main Street, Mechanicville, NY.  The DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, Inc. was established in October of 1982.  The first several years were lean and challenging, but through patience, hard work, luck and the willingness of families to give this new business a chance, they have become one of the leading funeral homes in their area of operation.  This family business has assisted many families from, not only Mechanicville and Stillwater, but also Halfmoon, Schaghticoke and neighboring lands.
