STILLWATER - Irene Koper Schweder, 93, longtime resident of County Route 75, died peacefully on Sunday, August 4th at the Glendale Home following a long illness. Born in Rillton, PA on January 8, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Mazurz Koper and wife of the late Charles J. Schweder who died in 2007.
Irene worked all of her life as a professional seamstress, for the former Marshall Ray in Troy, Korell Dress Manufacturers in Mechanicville and lastly for Ursula of Switzerland in Waterford before retiring in the early 90’s. She was a longtime member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Stillwater United Church.
At home, Irene enjoyed cooking, entertaining friends and family and spending time with her children, grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A tremendous party host, her bright blue eyes were a great greeting for the many attendees who would come.
Survivors include her cherished daughters Dawn(Russell) Clark of Wynantskill, Suzanne Schweder of Malta, Dr. Charlene Alouf of Media, PA, her grandchildren Sivan Irene Alouf and Aviv Charles Alouf, brother in law Peter Bongermino, sisters in law Gretchen Koper, Peggy Schweder and Alberta Schweder and many nieces and nephews.
The last of 13 children, Irene was predeceased by siblings Chet, John, Frank, George, Ed, Julius and Stanley Koper and sisters Julia Martin, Mildred Nash, Nellie Bongermino, Josie Finkle and Wanda McDonald.
Irene’s family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the Glendale Home’s Mohawk Trail staff for the outstanding care given to their mother during her stay and to volunteers of Community Hospice for the many visits with her.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 10 AM at DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville, NY 12118 with burial to follow at Saratoga National Cemetery. Calling hours at the Funeral Home on Thursday from 4-7 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of NENY, 4 Pine West Plaza. Suite 405, Albany, NY 12205 in loving memory of Irene M. Schweder.

I will never forget when I met Aunt Irene, Uncle Charlie, Dawn, Suzie, and Charlene for the first time sometime in the early 1970’s when they took a road trip to Long Island and surprised us knocking at our front door. I almost don’t remember a happier moment that my mom (Aunt Bertie) and her sister Aunt Chickie ever experienced. Truly. They had not seen their ever favorite aunt and uncle in many many years. The rest of us including my dad (Uncle Davey), my Uncle Lucky, my brother David, cousins Charlotte, Laura and Billy, plus a quick trip to the Bronx to get my Grandma Catherine (Charlie’s sister) and Aunt Catherine, was the most wonderful time meeting our cousins and all of us watching our parents reacquaint the love they’d had for each other all along. We were lucky to get together a few times after that, but never enough. Aunt Irene was the last of the generation from our side of the family. It is very sad. She was a lovely lady and I’m sorry to know she’s gone. Dawn, Suzie, Charlene, Sivan, and Aviv, I am so sorry for your loss and sending my heartfelt condolences your way. Love, cousin Leslie xoxo
