MECHANICVILLE – Salvatore C. Izzo, 81, of Grand St., died Friday, Sept. 7th at home in the peaceful company of his loving family. A native and lifelong resident of Mechanicville, born Dec. 21, 1930, son of the late Salvatore and Luisa Verdicchio Izzo. A 1947 graduate of Mechanicville High School, Sal was the co-owner of Sal’s Place Delicatessen and Catering Co., corner of Park and Central Aves in Mechanicville, from 1983 for 26 years, until retirement. He previously had been a statistician in the research lab of the former West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co. in Mechanicville until the plant closed in 1971. Also worked at Owens-Corning of Delmar and was the plant manager for T.A. Galante Paper Co. of Mechanicville and Menands. Sal served his community well over his lifetime, was a 55 year member of the W.B. Nielson Hose Co. #4 of the Mechanicville Fire Dept, and had held all company offices. In addition, he was a three time President of the Mechanicville Fire Dept. In the last decade, Sal served as the City of Mechanicville Commissioner of Finance for 3 years, until health issues prevented him for continuing on. He served his country with the US Navy, and was a member of the American Legion Post 91, was a charter member of the Dorothy Welch Choral Society, a communicant of Assumption-St. Paul Church, and was a member of the initial class of church lectors. Hobbies included playing golf, bowling and socializing with his buddies and cooking for anyone and everyone. Sal was talented in the dramatic arts, having produced, directed and writing several plays for the Fire Dept. and for Mechanicville’s sesquicentennial celebration. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Mary Grace Simmons Izzo, whom he married April 23, 1966. His kids: David “A.J.” and wife Mary Izzo and children Timmy, Aubrey and R.J. of Mechanicville, James and wife Shannon Harris and children Paige, Brenna, Sammy, Brandon, Hunter, Luke and Connor “Tugga”of Mechanicville, and Jacqueline and husband Dr. Anthony Signorelli of Schroon Lake. Also sister Mary Patterson of Mechanicville and her son Richard (Sharon) Patterson and granddaughters Shannon and Natalie, sister Mazie Kelley of California and her children John, Richard and Michael, Luisa and Elizabeth and their families, and sister Yolanda Palmer of Mechanicville, along with cousins and many, many friends. In addition to his parents, Sal was predeceased by two infant children Bridget Ann and Michael Jude Izzo, sister Ruth Izzo, brother Frank Izzo, brother-in-law John “Bing” Patterson and in-laws Al and Mary Cassidy Simmons and sister-in-law and husband Helen and Jim Harris. A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday at 11 AM at All Saints on the Hudson South Church, (St. Paul’s) 121 No. Main St.., Mechanicville. Burial with military honors at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Stillwater.
