Obituary for Roy E. LaFrancis Sr.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Roy E. LaFrancis, Sr, 80, longtime resident of the Capital Region, died on February 29, 2024 at Grand Strand Medical Center, Myrtle beach, after a brief illness. Born in Bennington, VT on November 14, 1943, he was the son of the late John and Ople Martin LaFrancis.

Roy joined the US Army in 1963, serving during the Vietnam War. He did two tours of duty in Vietnam, earning several commendations during his service. Roy served over 6 years of active duty before receiving his honorable discharge in 1969.

Roy began his career working for Firestone where he worked for 15 years. He then worked for the Watervliet Arsenal for many years, often working the overnight shift as a machine operator until his retirement. A longtime member of the American Legion Posts 178 - Murrells Inlet, SC and 490 - Stillwater, NY, Roy also belonged to the Disabled American Veterans(DAV). He also participated in the Special Olympics for Veterans.

Roy enjoyed traveling with his wife Janine, especially trips to Las Vegas, and also visiting his children, grandchildren, and siblings, in their different locations throughout the US. In his younger years, Roy was an accomplished pitcher who was often sought out to play on men’s softball teams throughout the Capital District. He was also a huge NY Yankee and Miami Dolphin fan.

Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Janine Scifo LaFrancis, whom he married October 24, 2013, as well as his children: Annick(Jeff) Cooper of South Burlington, VT, Valerie(Robert) Moore of Mechanicville, Roy(Josie) LaFrancis of Chula Vista, CA, and Doreen(Frank) Ronda of Stillwater, step-son Christopher(Katlyn) Ciampolillo of Albany, 23 grand and 5 great grandchildren(and 1 on the way). Also his sister Joan Williams of Norwood, MO, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings Margaret Jean Scherell, and Richard and George LaFrancis.

Calling hours at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 S Main St, Mechanicville, NY 12118, will be held on Sunday, March 10th from 1-4PM. A Funeral Home Service will follow starting at 4PM. Military honors and burial at the Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville will be held on Monday at 10:30AM. Those wishing to attend are asked to be at cemetery visitor center at 10:15AM.
