Obituary for Richard P. "Wacker" Shields

MECHANICVILLE - Richard P. Shields, 80, of Chestnut St, died unexpectedly at Samaritan Hospital on Thanksgiving morning, after being stricken at his home that morning. He was surrounded by his loving family. Born in Troy on February 11, 1943, son of the late John “Sharky” and Lucia “Elsie” Sabatino Shields, he was a 1961 graduate of Mechanicville High School.
Dick, who was affectionately known as “Wacker”, by family and friends, served three years in the US Army, stationed in Alaska, and three years as an army reservist, receiving his honorable discharge in 1969. He began a career working for the NYS Department of Labor, a job he held for nearly 30 years, until retiring in 1996 as a Senior Computer Specialist.
Early on Dick was an avid skier and excelled at baseball. He was an excellent cook, loved playing golf, spending time with his friends at the Legion and betting the horses at Saratoga Race Track. Most of all, Dick loved his family, especially enjoying family time at his summer home on Lake George, and he cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. At home, the TV was always on, he enjoyed watching his favorite game show “The Price is Right”, and loved TV time with Cookie watching "Judge Judy".
Dick was a past commander and lifelong member of the Henry F Lefko American Legion, Post 1644, Riverside and was also a longtime member of the Mechanicville-Stillwater Elks Lodge, and a proud member of the Traveling Outdoorsman.
Survivors include his loving companion and best friend of 51 years, Carolyn “Cookie” Patrick, as well as his loving children Dennis Shields of Gallatin, TN, Jeffrey (Teena) Shields of Mechanicville, and Gary Shields of Stillwater, grandchildren Ryan, McKenzie, Clarissa, Sophia, and Skylar Shields, great grandchildren Brielle, Colson and Everly, Cookie’s children James (Donna) Patrick, Vincent( Kristen)Patrick, and Colleen (Michael) Hannon and their families, his loving nieces and nephews, MaryJo (Thomas) Chase, Richard (Michelle) Mone, Charles (Claire) Mone, Robert (Shannon) Chase and lifetime friend, Ricky (Janice) Parietti, in addition to several great nieces and nephews, and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings John “Jack” Shields and Judith (Charles “Ganger”) Mone, and nephew Jacob Chase.
Calling hours will be held at All Saints on the Hudson (St. Paul’s Church), 121 N Main St, Mechanicville on Wednesday, November 29, from 4-7PM. A funeral mass at the Church will be held on Thursday at 10AM. Immediately following he will be buried with military honors at the Saratoga National Cemetery.
