Obituary for Anthony J. Festa

MECHANICVILLE - Anthony J. Festa, 101, of Elizabeth St, died peacefully in the comfort of his home on Wednesday September 13, 2023, with his loving family at his side. A native and lifelong resident of Mechanicville, born January 8, 1922, son of the late Sylvester and Margaret Forino Festa, he was a Mechanicville High School graduate.
Tony joined the US Navy at the age of 20 and proudly served his country during WWII, taking part in the American and Asiatic Pacific Theaters. During is time, he was stationed onboard the battleships USS J.W.Thomason and USS Pennsylvania, and the tanker ship, USS Pecos.
Upon returning home from military action, Anthony taught himself the trade on electrician and worked for the former Westvaco Paper Mill, eventually retiring after a long career.
A longtime member of the Italian Fraternal Society, Mechanicville, he held position of President several times and was the longest living member until the time of his passing. Several years ago, the IFS Bocce Courts were dedicated in his name, honoring his commitment to the club over the years. He was also a former member of the American Legion Post 1450, Halfmoon, and the Mechanicville Athletic Club. Tony enjoyed paying his daily numbers(427), betting the horses, trips to the casino, and especially a good game of Gin Rummy. A faithful member of the All Saints on the Hudson Parish, he spent many years on the Feast of the Assumption committee, a celebration he and his family honored for a lifetime.
Driving throughout the city well into his 100’s, Tony frequented several local business almost daily, as well as his rides through St. Paul’s Cemetery to visit his beloved Marie. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grand and great grandchildren and would frequently cook for them, his family famous meatballs and Italian cuisine.
In addition to his parents and cherished wife Marie DeCrescente Festa, who he lost in 1999, he was also predeceased by his son in law Michael Roman, and siblings Sylvester(Rita) Festa Jr, Rose(Al) Perrotta, Helen(Ed) Isabella, Carmella(Michael) D’Amico, and Rita(Frank) D’Ambrosio.
Survivors include his children Rita Roman, Donna Phelps, David(Pamela) Festa, James(Vickie) Festa, and Joann Rocco, grandchildren Nicole Roman, Renee Roman(Craig Osika), Mark and Jeffrey Phelps, Michael(Lauren) Festa, Emily(Jonathan) Curry-Edwards, Daniel and Katherine Festa, and Matthew(Erica) Rocco, great grandchildren Hailie Phelps, Sophie and Logan Phelps, Lauren and Ella Osika, and Vivienne and Samuel Curry-Edwards, along with many loving nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held at All Saints on the Hudson (St. Paul’s Church), 121 N Main St, Mechanicville on Sunday, September 17, from 3-5PM. A funeral mass, also at the church, will be held Monday at 10AM with military honors and burial to follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery.
