Obituary for Richard J. Garland

MECHANICVILLE - Richard “Dick” Garland, Sr., 85 of So. Third Ave, died Friday evening, June 30th, at Saratoga Hospital, after extended heart difficulties.
A native and lifelong resident of Mechanicville, born July 23, 1937, son of the late Arthur and Helen Commons Garland, he was predeceased by his wife of 48 years Barbara Johnson Garland in 2005 and his son Richard Garland, Jr.
Dick was the Head Custodian for the Mechanicville Public School Dist for many years, retiring after 33 years of service. He had later worked for Quick Response and the Mechanicville Golf Club (MGC). Years ago, he was a member of the former Imperials Drum/Bugle Corps, playing the cymbals, which he said caused his hearing difficulties.
Dick was proud of his 1987 Chrysler New Yorker, which won many “best car in show” awards over the years. Using today’s technology, he was a late blooming photographer, taking pictures of almost anything of interest, and sharing them with family and friends. He enjoyed baking pies and cookies, especially his famous Hawaiian Pie, which he shared with all. After full retirement, Dick found the love of the game of golf, was an active member of MGC, and played almost every day, riding his street legal conformed golf cart to and from. Come Christmas time, Dick displayed his ever growing Nativity scene and Holiday lights and figurines on his front yard. Dick doted on his family, and was proud of their lives.
Survivors include his daughters: Barbara (late William) Higgins and Heidi (David) Dube, sons Martin (Linda) Garland of Mechanicville and Anthony (Diana) Garland of Round Lake. Grandchildren: Heather (Joel) Fey, Justin (Tegan) Higgins, Joshua Garland, Matthew (Jess) Higgins, Ryan Higgins, T.J. Garland and Madelynn Dube, and great grandkids: Jazmyne, Kaden, Elijah, Evelyn, Kendyl, Eliana, Ciara, Ethan and Jordyn, along with number of nieces, nephews and their families. Dick was also predeceased by his siblings: Loretta Scott, Jane Talmadge, Michael Garland, Mary Ellen Cefferillo and Earl Garland.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday at 11 AM at All Saints on the Hudson Church, 121 No. Main St., Mechanicville, with burial to follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Calling hours at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville on Thursday from 4-7 PM.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to either the Shriners Children’s Hospital or Make-A-Wish Foundation in memory of Richard J. Garland.
