Obituary for Alfred C. Dorn

STILLWATER – Alfred C. Dorn, 72, passed away on January 28, 2023, at St. Peter’s Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Syracuse, NY on February 11, 1950, son of Marvin C. and May E. Dorn, he graduated from North Syracuse Central School and had attended Clarkson University.

During his 35 year career at General Electric, Schenectady, Al had begun a life of service, volunteering as a fire fighter and EMT in the village of Stillwater, NY. When the opportunity for early retirement came 2005, Al took it to enjoy time with his family and to further aid the community around him. To that goal, Al took on extra philanthropic and volunteer opportunities with the Mechanicville Area Community Services Center, becoming a member of its Board of Directors . He contributed countless hours to the pantries of both MACSC and Schaghticoke and worked at fundraisers for the Regional Food Bank to ensured that no one should go hungry. He loved helping make and deliver beds for children through the Sleep in Heavenly Peace charity.

Al took joy in learning and sharing with others throughout his life. Despite already being a cancer survivor, at the age of 65, Al recertified as a lifeguard and served at the Christ the King Spiritual Life Center in Greenwich, NY. Al had a beautiful bass voice and was not only a member of the Dorothy Welch Choral Society, he also sang with St. Luke’s choir for almost 40 years. Always wanting to learn and do new things, he certified as a ham radio operator and recertified as a Notary Public in his last month of life. In his personal time Al enjoyed working out at Vent Fitness and the YMCA, watching his grandson perform piano and at Shakespeare & Co., photography, classic cars, and sharing sundaes at Bubbles and kisses with his wife, Carol.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Carol A. Dorn (married July 19, 1969), daughter Eden(Daniel) Mabee of Medford, NJ, son Eric(Janel) Dorn of Stillwater, grandson Marcus N. Mabee, and siblings Edith Miller, Ronald(Kathy) Dorn, and Ellen Childress and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at St. Luke’s on the Hill Church on April 1st at 11am followed by a reception to share stories and happy moments from Al's life (this may take a while). Al's friends are asked to bring a friend with them.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Regional Food Bank of NENY, 965 Albany-Shaker Rd, Latham, NY 12110; Sleep in Heavenly Peace, Mechanicville Chapter, PO Box 664 - 18 So.
