Obituary for Jane M. Carabis (Gleeson)

MECHANICVILLE - Jane M. Carabis, 88, of Elizabeth St., sadly died Thursday, Feb 2nd, at her home of an extended illness in the loving company of her family.
Born in Stillwater, Sept. 30, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Calvin and Elvira (Cinella) Gleeson. Prior to raising her family, Jane had worked as a clerk for the Power Tube Department at the General Electric Co. in Schenectady, where she met the love of her life.
After her family had grown, Jane served the City of Mechanicville as the assistant City Clerk for Commissioner Clara Mae Pitcheralle for a number of years. She had also worked as a bookkeeper for the former Minter Petroleum Co. in Troy. An active member of her community, Jane had been associated with the Girls Scouts, taught Catechism for The Church of the Assumption, and was a volunteer with the City of Mechanicville Public Library.
An avid reader and life long learner, Jane was an accomplished knitter making many intricate gifts for family and friends. She was very involved in her cherished grandchildren’s lives, loved playing cards such as pinochle with her sisters and daughter, board games, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, solitaire and Mahjong on her laptop, and word games on her tablet. She was a communicant of All Saints on the Hudson Church and member of its Rosary and Altar Society.
Survivors include her loving husband of 66 years, Saverio “Sam” Carabis, whom she married on July 1, 1956. Her adored children Linda (Dale) Brown of Burlington, CT and Mount Holly, VT and David (Michelle) Carabis of Melrose, cherished grandchildren David (Cassandra) Carabis and Kimberly (Nick Campanelli) Carabis, step-grandchildren Shannon Brown and Brent (Jennifer) Brown, loyal sisters Roseann Lohrey of Delmar and Barbara (James) Kelly of Stillwater, along with many nieces, nephews and their families.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her siblings John and Calvin Gleeson, Elvira O’Brien, Cathy Caringi, also three adored nieces, Cathy (Gleeson) Yankowski, Erin Kelly, and Kelly (Gleeson) Dworak, and nephew Tony Caringi.
Jane’s family expresses heartfelt thanks to Candi Mirra of Hand N Hand and her home health aides for their skilled services and for the patient care and compassion shown to Jane, Sam, and her family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 AM at All Saints Church, 121 North Main St, Mechanicville, NY 12118, with burial to follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Calling Hours are on Monday from 4 - 7 PM at DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St, Mechanicville.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to either the Mechanicville Area Community Services Center or the Mechanicville Public Library, in memory of Jane M. Carabis.
