HALFMOON – Nicholas Paul Slish, 79, died suddenly, but peacefully, in the comfort of his home on Tuesday, November 29, 2022. Born in his family’s Watervliet home on December 22, 1942, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Irene Huff Slish.
Shortly after graduating Watervliet High School, Nick joined the US Marine Corps and proudly served his country from 1960-63.
He returned home from his time in the service and shortly thereafter, married his wife of 55 years, Sonya A. Swatling, on May 13, 1967. He was a mailman for USPS in Latham for several years and decided in the mid 70’s that he wanted to start a construction company. Nick Slish Construction was born and Nick worked for 45 years, eventually passing it along to his boys in 2015. Although retired, Nick would often pop onto the jobsite to check in.
Nick was a 58 year member of the Elks Lodge, including Watervliet, Clifton Park and lastly Mechanicville. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 91, Mechanicville.
He enjoyed coaching youth football as a young man and was an avid NY Giants fan. Later in life, he enjoyed playing darts at the Elks and most recently playing Gin with the guys at his buddy John Michaels garage. Upon arrival of his 3 great grandchildren, Nick found a new joy, spending time with them. They were truly the highlight of his life.
