Obituary for Sylvia J. Zeglen (Russell)

SCHENECTADY - Sylvia J. Zeglen, 93, of Schenectady, formerly a life-long resident of Mechanicville, died peacefully at Kingsway Arms Nursing Center, on August 11, 2022. Born in Mechanicville, October 30, 1928, daughter of the late Ralph and Ruth Bull Russell, Sylvia was also predeceased by her loving husband of 54 years, David R. Zeglen and also her brother Duane E. Russell.
Sylvia is survived by her brother Keith Thomas Russell of Woburn, MA, nieces Beth Jackson and Pam Perras, nephew David Russell, and six great nieces. Sylvia is also survived by her forever best friend from high school, Julia O’Brien, of Schenectady, and her very dear friend and God-daughter, Linda Ambrose as well as the entire Ambrose and Sherman families. Sylvia graduated from Mechanicville High School in 1945, and Albany Business College in 1947. She worked as a clerk for many years with the former West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co. of Mechanicville and then worked with State Bank of Albany until retirement.
During retirement, Sylvia and Dave spent many summers in Cape Cod, Mass. and winters in Ponce Inlet, Florida. Sylvia had a deep faith in God and was actively involved in the Mechanicville United Methodist Church, its Women’s Society and the Fellowship Club. She was also always available for, and a huge supporter of, the church’s many activities including teaching Sunday school, helping at church fairs, and as a financial secretary.
Sylvia’s family will always remember with gratitude the amazing support and care provided to her by the staff at Kingsway Arms Community, and all of the friendships she made throughout the years there.
There will be no calling hours. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday August 18th at 2PM at the Mechanicville United Methodist Church, 7 N Main St., Mechanicville, NY 12118 with burial to follow in Hudson View Cemetery. Friends may arrive at the church after 1:30PM. Light refreshments after the burial service will be available at the church for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Mechanicville United Methodist Church or Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St, Schenectady, NY 12308 in memory of Sylvia Russell Zeglen.
