Obituary for M. Joan Root (Allen)

MECHANICVILLE - M. Joan Allen Root, 94, of Hemstreet Park, passed peacefully away on Thursday, Apr 7, surrounded by her loving family at Eddy Memorial in Troy after an extended illness.
Born in Mechanicville on April 28, 1927, she attended Mechanicville High School, leaving school early to help care for her family. She was proud to complete her studies and obtain her GED certificate in her 40s when her children were grown. She then went on to obtain her Real Estate License. Joan worked as a salesperson for many stores in the area, such as: the Carl Co., Flahs, and DiSiena Furniture. She also waitressed at the former Joyce’s Log Cabin and the Cloverleaf Tavern.
Known by all as a kind, generous, pleasant woman, Joan would greet any and all with a genuine smile and always inquire about their family. She found great joy in being a caregiver for her family, friends, and grandchildren. Joan was a faithful communicant of All Saints on the Hudson Church, sang in the church choir, and was a longtime member of the Dorothy Welch Choir.
She was pre-deceased by her husband of 65 years, Wilbur O. Root (2015), her son Patrick (1999), and her siblings Edward, Robert, Martin, Richard “Andy”, John, and sister Nancy Welch.
Survivors include children: Mary (Brian) Emerson of Venice, Fla, Michael (Diane) Root of Halfmoon, Kathleen Philbin of Hood River, Oregon, William Root of Mechanicville, Matthew (Patti) Root of Halfmoon, and Maureen Codd of Niskayuna, 21 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will held on Monday at 10:00 AM at All Saints on the Hudson Church, 121 N Main St, Mechanicville, followed by a burial service beside her husband at the Saratoga National Cemetery. Calling hours will be held at DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville on Sunday from 2:00 - 5:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assoc. or to an Animal shelter of one’s choice, in loving memory of Joan Root. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Eddy Memorial for the gentle care they provided.
