Obituary for Stepha Poraski Vega (Poraski)

MECHANICVILLE - Mrs. Stepha Poraski Vega, 96, died Friday evening January 28th at Albany Medical Center, following a short illness, in the loving company of her family.
Born on Frog Island ( Riverside) Town of Stillwater, July 2, 1925 (almost a firecracker), daughter of the late John and Anna Olesko Poraski, Stepha was a 1942 graduate of Mechanicville High School. Stepha always told people that she lived in two houses her whole life, the one she was born and raised in on Frog Island, and the one she built with her husband Eddie on the banks of the Hudson just north of the iron bridge, a bridge she would often walk across in her youth.
Stepha worked for the Stillwater Central School District as a cafeteria aide and secretary for a number of years, and previously at General Electric Co in Schenectady for 9 years.
An active mother and resident, Stepha was a former troop leader for the Girl Scouts, a member of the Mechanicville Home Bureau, where she and others used their crocheting and knitting skills to provide homemade clothing items for the needy. She was also involved with the Stillwater TILT program, Stillwater Senior Time and a communicant of St. Peter's Church in Stillwater.
A proud mother of 3 daughters, grandmother and great grandmother, Stepha, the last sibling of the large Roman/Poraski clan, loved all her siblings' families. Stepha was a woman with the gift of making anyone she spoke to feel special, and that means anybody. She had an upbeat look at life, and radiated a true warmness to all.
She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Edward Vega in 2015, and sisters Sophie Callander, Dorothy Barbolt, Annie Andrews and infant sister Jennie Poraski, along with brothers Michael, Walter, Frank and Joe Roman and Nick Poraski.
Survivors include her three loving daughters: Laura (John) Goodman of Greenwich, Carol Ann Vega of Halfmoon and Janice Marie Vega of Stillwater, grandson Nicholas Goodman (Jenna Brophy) who she loved and considered a bonus granddaughter, and great granddaughter; Annalynn Stepha Goodman, the apple of her eye and her cutie pie, and many nieces, nephews and their families who all knew her as Aunt Steph. Her wonderful bread, rolls, galumpki, pierogi and kaluski will be missed. We will try to carry on the tradition.
A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday at 7 PM at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St, Mechanicville. Calling hours will precede services from 4-7 PM. Burial at Saratoga National Cemetery will be held on Thursday at 11 AM.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to your own favorite charity in memory of Stepha Poraski Vega.
