Obituary for Lawrence J. Whalen

MECHANICVILLE - Lawrence J. Whalen, 84, of William St., and a lifelong public servant, died Saturday, Sept 25th, at Evergreen Commons, after an extended illness.
Born in Troy, Feb 14, 1937, son of the late Joseph and Mary Alice Whalen, he was a 1954 graduate of Mechanicville High School. Larry served with the US Army in Germany for 2 years.
A longtime Fire Brigade Captain and Haz-Mat Coordinator for the General Electric Silicone Products Div. in Waterford for many years before retirement. A former Fire Chief of the Mechanicville Fire Dept, former Captain of the former D.E. LaDow Engine #2, former President and longtime member of the John Ahearn Rescue Squad, and part-time patrolman for the Mechanicville Police Dept. Later while living in T/Stillwater (Frog Island), Larry was elected as a Justice of the Peace for the Town, was a former Police Commissioner of the Town of Stillwater, and part-time patrolman.
In younger days, Larry played semi-pro baseball and basketball locally, was a coach for the CYO basketball program for years, and served the Red Raider school sports program as a medical attendant and attended all MHS varsity/jr varsity sports teams, either home or away games. Larry was always there at times of distress, injury and rehabilitation to many athletes over the years.
Survivors include his son and daughter in law Lawrence J. and Marcia Whalen II of Rotterdam, granddaughters Brittany Whalen of Boston and Kelsey and husband Andrew Poole of Rotterdam, along with cousins, lifelong friends, and the communities of Mechanicville and Stillwater.
In addition to his parents, Larry was also predeceased by former wives Elizabeth Patenaude and Colleen Hiser.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday at 9 AM at All Saints on the Hudson Church, 121 No. Main St., Mechanicville, and burial with military honors to follow at Saratoga National Cemetery.
Firemen, policemen and emergency services personnel, along with family and friends are invited to calling hours Thursday from 5-7 PM at the MFD Central Station, 55 N Main St, Mechanicville, NY 12118.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to either the Mechanicville Fire Dept, or the Mechanicville Police Dept PBA, in respectful memory a true public servant, Larry Whalen.
