Obituary for Margaret C. Jupin "Midge" Alonzo (Lawatsch)
CLIFTON PARK - Margaret C. Jupin Alonzo, “Midge”, 78, of Clifton Knolls, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home on April 27 after a courageous battle with cancer, with her loving and faithful family at her side.
Midge was born in Kingston, NY on June 20, 1942, daughter to the late Oscar and Margaret (Schupelack) Lawatsch. After graduating Kingston High School in 1960, she graduated from Albany Medical Center School of Nursing in 1963 with honors. Upon graduation, Midge worked as an RN at Albany Medical Center Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy, and in private duty homecare, retiring in 2007.
Midge was predeceased by her first husband of 39 years, John Jupin Jr. in 2003. She was also predeceased by her second husband of 15 years, Dominick D. Alonzo, in February 2020, and with whom she was able to share a renewed life of love after the passing of John. Dom’s son, Dominick J. Alonzo, and her brother, Donald J. Lawatsch, also predeceased her.
Midge is survived by her loving and devoted children: Christopher J. (Alyse) Jupin of Rexford and Stephanie (Frank) Darwak of Stillwater. Dom’s children James (Laura) Alonzo of Phoenix, AZ; Ava (Wences) Rodriguez of Latham; and MaryJo (John) Brue of Mechanicville; her dearest sister-in-laws Victoria Jupin, Mary Alonzo, and Ellen Alonzo all of Mechanicville; Carolyn Lawatsch of N. Quincy, MA; brother-in-law Joseph Alonzo of Mechanicville; her last surviving uncle Frank (Jessie) Lawatsch of Bethlehem, PA. Grandchildren: Christopher II and Cassandra Jupin; Samantha, Valerie, and Francis IV Darwak; Erin Alonzo Reeve; Kimberly, Jason, Gregory, and Kristen Alonzo; Roberto and Dr. Alison Rodriguez; John “Jack” and Luke Brue; 13 Great Grandchildren, and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families. She leaves behind her lifelong and dearest friend and “sister” of 70 years, Ms. Linda Dux of Rehoboth Beach, DE.
Midge was an original member of Harvard University Nurses Health Study (1976). She was a life member of AMC School of Nursing Alumni Association, member of American Legion Post #91 Auxiliary, Mechanicville, and member of the Clifton Knolls Civic Association. Midge was a talented cellist and played from grades 3 - 12 at Kingston HS. She was selected to play in the youth string orchestra in a quartet at Carnegie Hall and Symphony Hall in NYC. Soon after moving to Clifton Knolls in 1967, Midge joined the Clifton Knolls Bowling League at Latham Bowl. It was there she made life-long friendships of 50 years with many of the girls. Thus, her very dear friends and “sisters” formed a group called the “JUGS” - Just Us Gals. Midge also enjoyed golfing at Van Schaick Island CC, Clifton Knolls Tuesday Ladies League, and former member of the Edison Club. Midge loved the theatre and was a volunteer bartender at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady for almost 20 years.
Midge’s favorite place was in the kitchen cooking gourmet meals and holiday dinners were always special with her trademark dishes. She was known for her homemade jams and her homemade chocolate chip cookies and brownies that she made often for her grandchildren. She never used a computer nor had a smart phone and all her cards and letters were handwritten with love and lots of stickers. She enjoyed family vacations to the Jersey shore and Myrtle Beach with John and her family. She also took pride in her beautiful property and had a passion for flowers and gardening. Dom and Midge loved dining out and their yearly trips to Maine and the ocean. Midge enjoyed life to the fullest and touched the lives of many people. Those that met Midge knew she was “purely herself” and one of a kind. Midge not only loved to attend gatherings, she always brought the party! Midge was strong, selfless and caring, sacrificing so much for so many. She wouldn’t have it any other way. But above all else, Midge’s family was her #1 priority.

Calling hours will be on Friday, May 7, from 10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. at St. Edward the Confessor Church, 569 Clifton Park Center Rd, Clifton Park, with the funeral Mass immediately following. Burial will be at the Saratoga National Cemetery.
