Obituary for Edward J Schukes Sr.
MECHANICVILLE - Edward J. Schukes, Sr, 95, of East St, Riverside, passed away peacefully on March 15th at Stratton VA Medical Center. Born in Mechanicville, June 8, 1925, son of the late Joseph and Martha Schukes, after high school Ed enlisted in the US Army in 1943 during WWII and served until war's end. During his time in the war, Ed received two Purple Hearts for injuries sustained. A few short years after returning home, Ed joined the newly formed US Air Force, and served during the Korean Conflict where he was utilized as a survival expert.
Ed was a longtime brakeman and fireman with the Delaware and Hudson Railways, mainly at the Mechanicville yards until his retirement.
Proud of his Frog Island roots, he was a longtime member of the Henry F. Lefko American Legion Post 1644, and a volunteer fireman with the former Riverside Fire Department(Arvin Hart).
Ed enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and their families. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. At home he enjoyed tending to his gardens, and he also enjoyed trips to the casino, where he would play black jack or be found at the slots. In his younger years he enjoyed playing Euchre with his friends.
Survivors include his son Edward (Charlene) Schukes, Jr. of Malta, daughters Deborah Coon of Mechanicville and Joanne (Ted) St. Marie of Stillwater. Grandchildren: Stephen (Sara) Schukes, Amy (Patrick) Collery, Barbara (Nate) Myott, Lisa (James) Empie, Shawn (Cassie) Schukes and Nick St. Marie. Great grandchildren: Gunner, Adriana, Danika, Ivan, Kayla, Brian, Lucas, Kiara, Isaiah, Skyla, Nemo, Emily and Jason, along with great great grandson Sean Michael, and many nieces, nephews, and families.
Ed was predeceased by his former wife Beverly Kyhn, whom he became reacquainted with later in life, daughter Barbie Schukes, son in law Donald "Ducky" Coon, sisters Aggie Roberts, Sophie Rescott, and Josephine Schukes, and brothers Joseph, Albert, Luke and Tony Schukes and Joseph Bartnick.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family with military honors and burial at Saratoga National Cemetery.
