Obituary for Joseph Paul Hmura Jr.
MECHANICVILLE - Joseph "Paul" Hmura, Jr, 85, died peacefully at The Grand at Guilderland on March 14, 2021 after a brief illness. Born in Mechanicville on April 20, 1935, he was the son of the late Joseph and Kathryne Fisher Hmura and husband of the late Thelma Brown Hmura.
A 1952 graduate of Mechanicville High School, Paul joined the US AirForce a few years after high school and honorably served his country for 10 years until his discharge in 1965. He served as a Staff Sergeant with the 60th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron during the Vietnam war as an Aircraft, Navigation and Radar mechanic. Through the years, he kept up with his squadron and even attended one of their reunions.
After returning from the Air Force, Paul worked for the City of Mechanicville, in its Water Treatment Plant, as an operator until retiring in 1996 after 30 years. Active in his community, he was a former coach, fundraiser and advocate for MSLL, Connie Mack and CYO Basketball and was also a diehard NY Jets and NY Mets fan.
He was a lifelong member of the Assumption-St. Paul Parish and later of the Knights of Columbus and Holy Names Society.
Survivors include his loving children: Catherine Nelson of Stillwater, Michael(Lisa) Hmura of Nashville, TN., Joseph(Concetta) Hmura, III of Ballston Lake, Gerald “Jerry” Hmura of Saratoga Springs and Margaret “Peggy”(Eric) McChesney of Oakhurst, NJ. Grandchildren: Patrick Nelson, JR, Meaghan, Mark, Sydney and Lyndsey Hmura, Brooke and Bailee McChesney, sister in law Patricia Hmura, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife Thelma, he was predeceased by his brothers John "Jack" and F. William Hmura and sister-in-law Mary Hmura.
Calling hours at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville on Thursday from 5-7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30 AM at All Saints on the Hudson Church, 121 No. Main St., Mechanicville with military honors and burial to follow at the Saratoga National Cemetery. Following Pandemic guidelines, social distancing and wearing of masks will be required.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Jimmy Fund, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168 in memory of Joseph Paul Hmura.
