Obituary for Joan A. Brewster (Travis)

STILLWATER - Joan A. Brewster, 89, of Palmer St, died peacefully at Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Saturday, February 27, 2021 with her loving family at her side. Born in Stillwater on December 29, 1931, daughter of the late Floyd "Flip" and Charlotte "Lottie" Travis, she was a 1949 graduate of Stillwater High School.
Joan enjoyed her working career as a geriatric nurse's aide at Leonard Hospital in Troy for 26 years. The mother of six children, she was also very active in their upbringing, a member of the school booster club, the PTA, and a regular attendee of their academic and sports events. She also volunteered at the Stillwater United Church food pantry, the Stillwater Blockhouse, and was also involved in the Cub Scouts.
Joan cherished time with family, whether it was during trips to Hampton Beach or other spots along the New England coast, or just family gatherings at home. She enjoyed tending to her yard, bird watching, cooking big dinners, was a tremendous baker, famous for her Christmas cookies and birthday cakes. A talented musician, she was a good piano player, enjoyed dancing and had a beautiful voice which she shared at home and with the SUC Choir. She was an avid walker in the village, waving and smiling along the way because everyone knew her.
Sadly, Joan was predeceased by her husband of over 45 years, Gerald "Red" Brewster, her son Glenn E. Brewster, her brother Thomas Travis and her cat Tommy Boy.
Survivors include her beloved children: Deborah (Edward) VanVolkenburg of Clifton Park, Trudy (Bruce Phoenix) Canary of Halfmoon, Geoffrey (Carol) Brewster of Schuylerville, Susan (Roger) Johnson of East Greenbush and Lori Brewster of Guilderland, grandchildren Michelle and David Canary, Lisa Marcella, Kristina(Jacob) Rankin, Courtney(DJ) Witherspoon, 14 great and 4 great great grandchildren, brothers Elton and John Travis and several nieces and nephews.
Currently, private services will be held at the convenience of the family and there will be no calling hours. A public graveside service at Stillwater Union Cemetery will be announced in the spring.
