Obituary for John E. DeVito

SARATOGA SPRINGS - John E. DeVito, "Poppi", 81, of Saratoga Springs, NY and Boynton Beach, FL passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 in the comfort of his home. John was born March 14, 1939 in Mechanicville, NY, son of the elate John and Mary Martin DeVito.
There, he grew up and established himself as a formidable athlete and graduated from Mechanicville High School in 1956. After High School he attended both Syracuse University and Siena College where he participated in track and football. John proudly served his country in the US Army from 1959-1964. He married his wife Kathleen in 1964 and they were happily married until her death in 2015.
John worked at General Electric for upwards of 40 years. Work brought his family across the country as they lived in Upstate New York, Georgia, and Kansas. He made countless connections over the years with General Electric and considered many of his co-workers his close friends and confidants. Following his retirement in 1999, he continued to work in consulting as he traveled the world and often used these trips as an excuse to take his wife "Kass" sight-seeing. Along with traveling, John loved to play golf and bet the horses in Saratoga. His grandchildren added that Poppi was always quick to a joke and certainly quick to a smoke. John was a fixture his grandchildren's athletic contests growing up. He loved watching his son coach and spending time with his grandchildren. Friends, parents and other attendees of games would often approach John for his opinion on a game as smoke billowed from his cigar. John is also survived by his faithful dog, Kasey.
John was predeceased by his mother, Mary, his father, John Peter, his wife, Kathleen and his son, Douglas DeVito.
John is survived by his son John A. DeVito and his wife Amy of Ballston Spa, his two grandchildren, Jake and Samantha and several nieces and nephews on his wife's side.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, February 21 at his childhood home, DeVito-Salvadore Funeral home, 39 S Main St, Mechanicville, NY from 3-5PM. Funeral home service will be Monday at 10AM followed by military honors and burial at Saratoga National Cemetery. Covid-19 protocols will be in place for all services.
