Obituary for Bernard A. Murphy
BURNT HILLS - Bernard “Bubba” A. Murphy, 74, passed away Thursday, Feb 11th, after a short illness, surrounded by his cherished family who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest.
Born in Pittsfield, Mass Nov. 17th, 1946, he was the youngest son of the late Robert and Helene Andrews Murphy and cherished baby brother of Robert E. Murphy Jr. and William P. Murphy. Bernie proudly served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War, discharged with honors in 1969. Bernie and his wife of 51 years, Beverly, raised their daughters, Helene and Tammy, in Mechanicville. After leaving the Tobin Packing Co. upon its closing, Bernie worked at the NY State Department of Taxation and Finance in Albany for 27 years. Together with his wife, they retired in 2007. It was then that Bernie took on his favorite job of all, working full time in the role of “Poppie”. His job responsibilities, in support of his grandchildren, were critical and essential: making endless school drop offs, Sunday morning bagel and donut deliveries, dropping sneakers off at school, bringing much needed after school “snacks” before a practice and so much more.
Bernie was a proud member of the Mechanicville-Stillwater Elks Lodge 1403 and the American Legion Post 91. He was a very active member of the Mechanicville Golf Club as a competitive golfer, who found extensive joy in playing with many member friends weekly, and sharing stories and laughter at the nineteenth hole. He never shied away from telling stories about his several hole-in-ones and his perfect 300 games on the bowling lanes. Today, Bernie enjoys a Preferred Lie in the afterlife.
Bernie was known to have a smile on his face, be quick with a joke and much fun to be with. His greatest joy was spending time with his wife, daughters, son-in-laws, and cherished grandchildren. He was devoted to watching his family grow and thrive.
Survived by his wife of 51 years, Beverly Porter Murphy, loving daughters Helene (Michael) Verdile and Tammy (Matthew) Hladun, along with adored grandchildren: Michaela, Julia and Sam Verdile, Ben, Max and the late Willem Bernard Hladun. Bernie is also survived by his brothers, Bob and Bill (Jean) Murphy as well as cousins, nieces, nephews and granddogs.
The family would like to give a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Joanne Porter, Rob Saba, Kirstyn Alonzo and the Community Hospice of Saratoga as well as the doctors, nurses and medical staff who took special care of him during his time at Albany Medical Center.
A burial entombment with military honors will be held 11 AM Wed, Feb 17th at Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Rd., Schuylerville. Friends who wish to attend, are asked to arrive at the Cemetery entrance at 10:45 AM. Pandemic protocols will be observed, social distancing and mask wearing required.
