Obituary for Leona E. Sweeney

STILLWATER - Leona E. Sweeney, 85, of Sweeney Farms, Route 67, died Monday morning at Glens Falls Hospital, after a prolonged battle with multiple health issues. Born in Halfmoon, Oct 8, 1935, she was daughter of the late Anthony “Gah-gee” and Estella Kopyc Anuszewski, and wife of the late George Sweeney.
Leona was a proud 1953 graduate of Greenwich High School and was a lifelong homemaker who raised her four sons. She supported her husband and boys in the daily operations of the family farm, trucking and horse business.
She appreciated the simplest pleasures in life. Family vacations to the Atlantic coast seashores and other Adirondack Lake Region day-trip adventures were what she enjoyed most. One of the last of the true pure-bred descendants of Polish immigrants, Leona held fast to Polish traditions including a love for its Polka music and dance. With her inherited infectious laughter and extraordinary gifted ability to be-friend anyone she encountered, one never went away a stranger. A faithful daily prayer warrior, Leona was a communicant of Corpus Christi Church in Ushers, and also attended Greater Grace Community Church of Malta under the shepherding of Pastor David Moore.
Survivors include her sons : Lawrence (the late Leah) Sweeney of Mechanicville, Terrence (the late Susan) Sweeney of Mattituck, LI, Gary (Diane) Sweeney of Ballston Spa and Matthew (Christina) Sweeney of Poland, NY, along with 10 grand and 4 great grandchildren. A sister Irene (Arthur) Robbins of Fort Edward and brother Anthony (Robbin) Anuszewski Jr. of Schaghticoke , a sister in-law Kathy (the late Timothy) Sweeney of Mechanicville along with nieces, nephews and other family members . Also, predeceased by her brother John and his wife Rose Anuszewski of Greenwich NY .
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 11:30 AM at Corpus Christi Church, 2001 Route 9, Round Lake, NY 12151 with burial to follow in St. Paul's Cemetery, Mechanicville. Friends may visit with family at the Church from 10 AM till 11 AM Saturday morning.
