MECHANICVILLE - Robert L. Southworth, 84, of Broadway, died Saturday, January 16th, at his home, with his loving family by his side.
Born in Concordia, Kansas, April 12, 1936, son of the late William and Lucille Southworth Piroli, Bob and family moved to Mechanicville at a young age, and was a 1954 graduate of Mechanicville High School.
Bob enlisted in the US Air Force in Feb 1955, and served as a medic while based in Alaska and Washington, D.C., honorable discharged in 1959.
Soon thereafter, Bob began a 33 year career as a postal clerk and asst supervisor with the US Post Office in Mechanicville, retiring in 1991. Thereafter, Bob assisted his son Rob in his CPA accounting businesses.
Bob was well known throughout his postal career, and was very active within his community, as a vol. fireman with the WL Howland #5 Co. of Mechanicville Fire Dept., bowled in the firemans bowling league, became an avid golfer, member of M-S Elks Lodge 1403 and the local Knights of Columbus where he was a Grand Master for 3 years. A Communicant of Corpus Christi Church in Ushers, Bob served as a eucharistic minister, lector and on the bereavement committee. Also a member of the Holy Names Society of St. Paul's Church.
Bob enjoyed yearly trips to Cape Cod and Kennebunkport, Maine. He loved to read, and the Cowboy within him especially loved western novels and western movies. A "Die Hard" Kansas City Chiefs football fan, Bob enjoyed his team winning Super Bowl LIV, and a favorite in this years Super Bowl.
In addition to his parents, Bob was sadly predeceased by sons Patrick and Christopher Southworth and brothers William Southworth and Julius Piroli.
Survivors include his adored wife of 62 years, Mary Ellen Gandrow Southworth,, sons: Robert A (Mary Theresa) of Loudonville and John (Tami) of Mechanicville, daughters-in-law Patricia Southworth of Ballston Lake and Kristin Southworth of Queensbury. Proud grandchildren: Krista (Matt) Malinoski, Colleen (Chris) Reckner, Jason (Ruth), Joseph (Rachael), Maria and Rachael Southworth, along with great grandkids Kendall, Nathaniel and Makayla. Also brother Tony Piroli of Mechanicville and sister-in-law Karen Southworth Watson.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday at 9 AM at Corpus Christi Church, Route 9 and Ushers Rd, Ushers, with military honors burial to follow in St. Paul's Cemetery, Mechanicville.
Visitation services will be Tuesday from 4-6:30 PM at Corpus Christi Church, where CO-VID 19 guidelines such as social distancing and mask wearing will be practiced.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Corpus Christi Church or Community Hospice, in respectful memory of Robert L. Southworth.
