Obituary for Derek R. Becker

COHOES - Derek R. Becker, 21, died tragically Sunday, Dec 20th, in West Palm Beach, Fla. Born in Albany, August 27, 1999, son of James Becker and Mindy Dugan. Derek was a 2017 graduate and standout athlete at Cohoes High. After high school, Derek received a baseball scholarship for Iona College, played middle infield for the Gaels for several years, and transferred to Keiser University in West Palm Beach, Fla. to play his remaining eligibility years for the Seahawks, playing in the NAIA college division.
Baseball was Derek's passion, a true lover of the game, beginning as a child, thru Little League, Babe Ruth, Summer travel teams and the Cohoes High School Tigers, where he earned league first team all star status, along with first team all Times Union small school selection for 2016 and 2017 seasons as a infielder. Derek was respected by his coaches, fellow players and opposing coaches, for his hard work , dedication, always a fierce competitor and a solid young man.
When he was born, his parents named him Derek, and over the years, he tried to emulate his favorite baseball all star, Hall of Fame retired NY Yankee Derek Jeter, and wore the same numbered jersey, # 2, and played the same position, shortstop as his idol.
Derek had a world of friends, enjoyed his family's summer vacations, and had a knack of creating memories for all to remember him by.
Survivors in addition to his parents include his loyal brother Tyler, his uncle Todd (Louise) Dugan of Guilderland, aunt Amanda Blair (Don Rogers) of Cohoes. Also survived by great grandfather Richard Martini of Albany, several aunts, uncles cousins, friends, coaches and teammates from years past. Derek was predeceased by his paternal grandparents Robert Marsh (Pop) and Debbie Becker and maternal grandparents Michael and Vicki Blair.
