Obituary

SCHENECTADY - Augustus Gildo Pallotta, 82, died peacefully in the comfort of his home on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 with his loving family at his side. Born in Zolli, Italy, on May 6, 1938. Son of the late Eliseo and Maria Lombardi Pallotta, he came as a teenager to the United States, where he and his family settled in Watertown, MA.
Affectionately known as Tino by all, he received his B.A at Boston University, Masters at Indiana University and PhD at Columbia University. He would eventually become a professor of Romance Languages and Literatures at Syracuse University, where he proudly taught for over 40 years. Tino was editor of Syracuse University’s Symposium literary journal and also published numerous books and articles examining European literature of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Tino cherished his time teaching, but when he had the chance to be home, he enjoyed being outdoors working in his garden. He also enjoyed traveling with his family and was an avid reader in his spare time. He loved his wife, was proud of his boys and their accomplishments, and treasured being Nonno to his adoring grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Lucille Izzo Pallotta, who he married on June 14, 1969, his sons and their wives, Sanford "Sam"(Kimberly) Pallotta of Rye Brook, NY and Lee(Catherine) Pallotta of Acton, MA, cherished grandchildren Ava, Veronica, Cailin and Luke, siblings Elena Piantadosi, Lillian Parrella, Gilda(Tom) Cordone and many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings Antonietta Taddeo, Ralph and Ernest Pallotta.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, current services will be private and held at the convenience of the family with burial at St. Paul's Cemetery. During this extremely difficult time, we strongly encourage friends and family to visit devito-salvadorefh.com to share condolences, photos and memories of Tino you may have, with his family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions honoring Tino may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, 4 Pine West Plaza, Suite 405, Albany, NY 12205 in his memory.

Lucy, Sam, Lee and families - I share your deep sorrow and am sending my love across the miles. I can remember Tio Tino's voice and laugh and I cherish the friendship he had with my father. I find it tragic that such great minds both suffered from such a cruel disease. Below are the words Tio Tino wrote about my dad that we read at his memorial service in 2004. I wanted to share them here to honor Tino's sense of humor and their friendship. Love to you all!

"A Remembrance of Dan Testa, by Tino Pallota
My close relationship with Dan Testa can be traced to the day I started teaching at S.U. He stopped me as I was walking down the corridor of H.B.C. and said:” You must be the Italian guy. Where are you from in Italy?” When I told him I am from Benevento, near Naples, he responded: “Oh, the Deep South.” Annoyed at what I thought was a snide remark, I retorted: “So what?” “Well,” he said. “my parents are from Calabria, the even deeper South.” We both laughed, shook hands, and became good friends.
As time passed, Dan' s publications brought him recognition as a scholar of Spanish and Latin American literature. Nevertheless, he remained as unpretentious as he was the first day I met him. He loved to make others laugh, and I always enjoyed his company. Although I am deeply saddened by Dan's passing, I am happy to have known him. I will always cherish the memories I have of the time we spent together."

Dear Aunty Lucy, cousins Sam and Lee and to all the family, our deepest sympathy to you all. We had the honour of meeting with Uncle Tino recently in Boston and on 2 other brief occasions we he visited Australia. I only wish we could have got to know him better. I love reading all about his many accomplishments and feel very happy and proud that he is my Uncle. It became very apparent as soon as we met home that he a kind and gentle soul, a brilliant mind that has influenced so many lives through his writing and his teachings.
