Obituary for Michael D. "Shorty" DiNallo Jr.
MECHANICVILLE - Michael D. DiNallo, Jr. (a.k.a. “Shorty”), a life-long resident of Mechanicville, passed away in the loving arms of his family on Tuesday, May 7th after being stricken at his home. He was 83.
Born September 29th, 1935 to Michael and Anna Parente DiNallo, Mike attended Mechanicville Elementary / High School and graduated from Utica Tech College. He married the love of his life - Patricia Greenwood - on June 1st, 1958.
Drafted into the United States Army in 1958, Mike spent 6 months at the Guided Missile School at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama before spending the next two years on active duty in Korea. Upon his return from Korea, he finished his military tenure as part of the US Army Reserve, and then began his civilian career with ALCO in Schenectady until its closing. He spent the next 25 years working as a draftsman and engineering specialist with GE’s Knolls Atomic Power Lab (KAPL) division in Niskayuna, retiring in 1999.
A 43-year volunteer firefighter and Life Member with Hillcrest Fire Department, Mike spent 11 years as Fire Commissioner, 4 of those as Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners. He cherished his many friendships and enjoyed socializing over morning coffee with his extended Hillcrest family.
Mike’s greatest joy was doing anything that involved his family. He was a master of all trades and always front and center when anyone needed his help. He was a leader and mentor in every regard, and cherished every opportunity to impart his wisdom and expertise, especially when it came to his sons-in-law whom he loved as his own sons.
Previously deceased by his parents, his sister Agnes Izzo, and his brother-in-law Frank Izzo, Mike is survived by his wife of 60 years Patricia Greenwood DiNallo, his three daughters - Theresa (Tim) Higgins, Donna (Jack) Izzo, and Regina (David) Thompson, along with his cherished grandchildren - Maggie, Kelsey, and Eamonn Higgins; Jack and Brandon Izzo; and Grace, Matthew, and Kate Thompson. He also leaves behind his brother and best friend Anthony (Linda) DiNallo, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday May 13th at 9:00 am at All Saints on the Hudson Roman Catholic Church, 121 No. Main Street in Mechanicville, with military honors and burial in Saratoga National Cemetery. Calling hours will be at the CHURCH on Sunday from 2-5 pm.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Hillcrest Fire Department or St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in loving memory of Michael DiNallo.
