Obituary for George J. Sweeney

MECHANICVILLE - George J. Sweeney, 83, of Route 67, died peacefully at the Saratoga Center, Ballston Spa, following a long illness. Born May 13, 1934, he was the son of Joseph and Jessie Butcher Sweeney.
A hard worker and proud farmer, George owned and operated Sweeney Farms on Rt. 67 after taking over for his father at a young age. He graciously worked a lifetime of farm work and taught his ways to his children and other family members and friends as well. Sweeney Farms specialized in dairy and crop and eventually also included trucking, excavating and horse boarding.
George was a member of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County, the New York Farm Bureau, and a lifelong member of Corpus Christi Church. He enjoyed deer hunting, the outdoors and visits with friends and family. Over the last 10 years of his life, George had been shepherded by Pastor David Moore of the Greater Grace Community Church, Malta.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Leona Anuszewski Sweeney, his sons and wives Lawrence and Leah of Mechanicville, Terry(The late Susan) of Mattituck, Long Island, Gary and Diane of Ballston Spa and Matthew and Christina of Poland, NY, 10 grandchildren and a great granddaughter, sisters in law Kathy and Debbie Sweeney and many nieces and nephews.
George was predeceased by his sisters Dale Coreno and Judith Thompson and brothers Philip, Timothy, Thomas and infant Kevin Sweeney.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 8th at 11 AM at Corpus Christi Church, Route 9, Ushers with burial to follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery.
Calling hours at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville on Monday from 4-7 PM.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the American Diabetes Assoc., 2 Pine West Plaza, Suite 505, Albany, NY 12205 in memory of George J Sweeney.
