Obituary for Cecelia B. Ropitzky (Carroll)

STILLWATER ,NY - Mrs. Cecilia B. Ropitzky, 92, of Durham Road and Nantucket MA, died peacefully Saturday, Jan 6th , 2018 at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center, after a brief illness.

Born in Poughkeepsie, NY Oct 5, 1925, daughter of the late James and Cecilia (Brauneis) Carroll, she graduated from Oakwood Friends School and Syracuse University in 1949 with a degree in Home Economics. Mrs. Ropitzky was employed as a social worker for Saratoga County at the former Maplewood Manor in Ballston Spa. She had also worked for the Albany Association of the Blind and as a Cornell Co-operative Extension Agent of Saratoga County

Through her work as a county agent, this city girl met (and married) dairy farmer Steven Ropitzky and worked alongside him on their farm in Stillwater. The couple also operated a farm business at the Saratoga Race Course.

As an adolescent, Cecilia lost a kidney due to a horseback riding accident, yet this did not impede her zest for life. She was a lifelong summer resident of Nantucket Island, often seen swimming in the surf. In her youth she loved to race catboats and Nantucket Indian sailboats in Nantucket harbor. She, along with her family, learned to ski at Willard Mountain and became a fixture at her children’s ski racing events.

Cecilia and Steven were known for their hospitality in both Stillwater and Nantucket, where no one was ever turned away from their table.

She had been a member of St. Peter and St. Paul Ukrainian Church of Cohoes, NY, and more recently was a communicant at St. Clements Church in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Steven in 2007, a son Daniel in 2005, her sister Jane Mullen and her brother James E. Carroll. Survivors include her loving children: Carol (Richards) Miller of Waterbury, Vt., Diane (Thomas) Kerr of Concord, Ma, Steven Ropitzky of Stillwater and her daughter-in-law Margaret Layton of Nantucket MA along with grandchildren Chad and Tanya Miller, Galen Kerr, Claude Ropitzky and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10AM on April 26th at St. Clement’s Church, 231 Lake Ave, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 with burial to follow in St. Peter and St. Paul Cemetery, Waterford NY.

Calling hours at DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 S Main St, Mechanicville, NY 12118 on Wednesday April 25th from 4 - 7 PM.
