Obituary for Jean Matrazzo (Castelli)

Jean Matrazzo (Castelli)
MECHANICVILLE - Jean Matrazzo, 89, of Farrell St. died Thursday, March 29th at Home of Good Shepherd, Malta, after an extended illness.

Born in Montreal, Canada, August 23, 1928, daughter of the late Dominic and Palma Castelli, Jean and her late husband owned and operated the highly successful Matrazzo Florist next door to her family home for many years. In addition to raising her five children, Jean spent lots of time greeting and serving customers for their busy shop, designing weddings, and was famous for her signature decorative bows.

Upon retiring in the 1990’s, she turned over her business to family members and would assist during the busy holiday seasons. Her motto in life was “Tomorrow is another day.” She was a longtime member of the Junior Dante Club, who loved gardening about her home. A devoted attendee of Assumption-St. Paul Church, Jean instilled faith to her entire family.

She was predeceased by her husband Louis “Ralph” Matrazzo in 1981 and a son, James, in 2003. Survivors include her children: Marilyn (Greg) Connors of Malta, Ernest (Deborah) Matrazzo of Mechanicville, Joni (Chuck) Brady of Alexandria, VA, and Barbara (Pete) Borini of Clifton Park. Adored grandchildren: Jennifer (George) DiPiro, Matt (Dayana) Connors, David (Kristen) Connors, Justin Matrazzo, Michael and Ryan Brady, Michael and Marissa Borini, along with great grandchildren Hadynne, Sonja, Penelope, Dominic, Alexander and Rowan. Siblings Bruno, Lou and Norma Castelli of Montreal, brother-in-law Ernest “Frosty” and Helen Izzo, and dear friend Marie DeVito of Mechanicville. Predeceased by sisters Amy, Lillian, Doreen, and Phyllis.

Jean’s family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Home of the Good Shepherd and Community Hospice, especially Hospice Nurse Alice Benfey, for their care and compassion throughout her journey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 AM at All Saints on the Hudson Church, 121 No. Main St, Mechanicville with interment in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Calling hours at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville on Tuesday from 4-7 PM.

Remembrances may be made to Community Hospice in memory of Jean Matrazzo.
