SARATOGA SPRINGS - Paul H. Scannell, 79, died Monday, March 26th at Van Rensselaer Manor, after an extended illness.
Born in Boston, Mass, Dec 20, 1938, son of the late Timothy and Hazel Scannell, Paul received an undergraduate degree in aeronautical engineering from Boston University and a masters degree from St. Louis University.
He served as a LTjg with the US Navy in the 1960’s as a helicopter pilot,
Paul worked many years in the sales dept of General Electric’s Gas Turbine business in Schenectady and later for Powmat Limited of Clifton Park.
After retirement, Paul was a volunteer at the Saratoga National Cemetery’s Visitor Center, assisting families and funeral details for many.
The sport of Hockey was a constant presence in his life, playing in schools, semi-pro and friendly pick-up games. After his playing days, Paul was a coach and off ice official with the American Hockey League, off ice officiating for the Albany River Rats and Devils for years. He was proud to have coached and assist with the LaSalle Institute of Troy hockey program, including LaSalle’s NY Sate Championship in 2000.
A member of the American Legion Post 1450 of Clifton Park, he was also a member of St. Edwards and St. Peter’s Roma Catholic Churches.
His wife, Ann Marie Martin Scannell died Nov 22, 2006.
Survivors include his son Bryan and Christine Scannell of Wynantskill, grandchildren: Owen, Maggie and Zoe Scannell, his sister Marilynn Morris of Mass, dear friends Diane Parisi of Saratoga Springs and Wayne DeSorbe of Stillwater, along with nieces, nephews and their families.
Paul was also predeceased by his brothers Robert and Richard Scannell.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, Apr 3rd at 10 AM at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, 175 Williams Road, Troy,(south of Hudson Valley CC)
A gathering of friends will be held from 9 AM until the Mass on Tuesday.
Inurnment at Saratoga National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the LaSalle Institute’s Hockey Program, in memory of Paul H. Scannell.
