Latham - John Hagan, 90, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2018 after living a long and fulfilling life. He was born on February 8, 1927 to James Joseph Hagan and Henrietta Heinrich Hagan. His wife of 65 years, Janet Russ Hagan, predeceased him in 2013. He is survived by his children Jill Hagan of Cohoes, Leslie Abraham Laven (Mark) of Loudonville, and Kyle Hagan Perrotta (Paul) of Latham, two grandchildren Whit Abraham (Samantha) of Arlington, VA and Max Perrotta. He was predeceased by his brother James Hagan and is survived by three nieces and several great nieces and nephews. John was born in Albany and graduated from Albany High School. He served in the US Navy from 1945 - 1954 and was awarded three medals for his service in WWII and the Korean War. After leaving the Navy, he was employed by Niagara Mohawk for over 25 years. John was a private pilot, a patriot, a wonderful grandfather and an active member of the Civil Air Patrol for many years. John was a talented cook with a particular love for seafood. He had a wonderfully curious mind, loved people and dogs, and always had a joke to pass along. He was a bright and vibrant soul to his last day! John was a dedicated grandfather, who sparked a passion for aviation and service in the Navy to his grandson Whit. One of his proudest moments was attending Whit’s graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2006. Five years later he traveled to Owego, NY to witness Whit take delivery of the Navy’s newest helicopter from Lockheed Martin and fly it back to San Diego. He enjoyed watching his grandson Max play baseball, and they shared many hours cheering the Yankees on. With a twinkle in his eye, he often quipped “my name is Charlie, and these are my angels” referring to his three daughters.
The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Gardner and Rich Clark for many years of compassionate care and the Hospice Inn at St Peter’s and especially Victoria, his nurse. Particular thanks to Carolina Nunez, his aide, for her care and friendship to John. She became a trusted and dear friend to him, and enriched the quality of his life these last few years.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Sunday from 2-5 PM at Dufresne and Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Road, Latham.
Burial with military honors has been set for Monday at 11 AM at Saratoga National Cemetery.
