Obituary for Edward J. Russell, Sr.

HALFMOON - Edward J. Russell, Sr., 92, of Raylinsky Lane, died peacefully on Tuesday January 16th, at Ellis Hospital, following a brief illness. Born in Stillwater, April 7, 1925, he was the son of the late Charles and Malvina Russell.
Ed served as a medic with the US Army during WWII, returning home at the end of the war in 1946. He worked as the Highway Superintendant for over 30 years until his retirement. He also owned and operated the Russell Dairy Farm in Halfmoon for a number of years. He worked hard on a daily basis to provide for his family.
He was a charter member and longtime Chief of the Hillcrest Fire Department. He was also recently celebrated as a 70 year member of the Henry F. Lefko, American Legion Post 1644, Riverside and also a lifelong member of All Saints on the Hudson Parish.
A fan of all sports, he was a die hard NY Yankee fan. His favorite teams however, were the teams any of his grandchildren or great grandchildren were playing on and he was proud of all their accomplishments, both academically and athletically.
Ed was also a former prize winning polka dancer in his younger years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Hedwig Raylinsky Russell, whom he married on June 7, 1947, his three children, Edward and wife JoAnne Russell, Jr, Vincent Russell and Rhonda and Patricia and husband Joseph Meyer all of Halfmoon. Grandchildren Jodi(Joe) DeMarco, Todd(Terri) Russell, Christopher(Andrea) Meyer, Nicholas(Cheryl) Meyer and Vincent E. Russell, great grandchildren Alysa and Brandon Russell, Colby and Maya DeMarco and Nathaniel, Edward and Theodore Meyer as well as his sister Katherine Notro.
He was predeceased by his siblings John and Robert Russell and Helen Kenyon, Jennie Palmer and Theresa Mokay.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 9:00 AM at All Saints on the Hudson South Church, 121 N Main St., Mechanicville, NY 12118 with military honors and entombment to follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery.
Calling hours at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 S Main St, Mechanicville on Friday from 4-8 PM.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Hillcrest Fire Department, 145 Pruyn Hill Road, Mechanicville, NY 12118 in memory of Edward J. Russell, Sr.
