MECHANICVILLE - John J. Sylvester, 97, formerly of Saratoga Ave, died on New Years Eve at the Eddy Memorial in Troy, following a brief illness. He was born in Mechanicville, June 10, 1920, son of the late Anthony and Anastacia Peluso Sylvester.
John honorably served his country in the US Army during WWII from 1940-45.
Prior to joining the Army, John worked for a short time on the B&M Railroad in Mechanicville. After returning home from the war, he worked for WESVACO until it closed in 1971 and later began working for G.E. Schenectady until his retirement.
John loved being a grandfather to his precious granddaughters and great grandchildren. They truly were the lights of his life. A die hard NY Yankee fan, he was a member of the Peters Purcell ITAM Post 21 in Mechanicville, the Assumption-St. Paul(All Saints on the Hudson) Parish and its Holy Name Society.
Survivors include his loving wife of 67 years, Mary Angelino Sylvester, whom he married on June 11, 1950, his two sons and their wives Anthony “Chico” and Donna Sylvester and John “Jack” and Patricia Sylvester, 4 cherished granddaughters Kimberly(Dominick) DiMattina, Carly(Joseph) Trumfio, Barbara and Angela Sylvester, great grandchildren Bella and Anthony Joseph Tumfio and several nieces and nephews.
John was predeceased by his siblings Angelo and Nick Sylvester, Lydia Rinaldi and Mary Fusco and a younger brother who died as a child, Nick Sylvester.
Calling hours on Monday January 8th from 4 - 7PM at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 S Main St Mechanicville, NY 12118. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday the 9th at 9:30am at All Saints on the Hudson South Church, 121 N Main St, Mechanicville, NY 12118 followed by military honors and burial at the Saratoga National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Community Hospice of Rensselaer, 295 Valley View Blvd, Rensselaer, NY 12144.
