Obituary for Joseph A. Izzo

Joseph A. Izzo
MALTA - Joseph A. Izzo, 69, passed away Sunday July 9th following an intensive battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma the last several years.
Born in Troy, February 6, 1948, son of the late Sanford and Carmella Sgambati Izzo, Sr., Joe was a 1966 graduate of Mechanicville High School, where he starred in football and baseball. He graduated from Princeton University in 1970 with a degree in Civil Engineering.
Joe was a Vice-President/Senior Project manager for HDR Inc. in New York City. He previously had worked for Berger-Lehman, A.G. Lichenstein Engineers, URF Engineering Company and the NY State Dept. of Transportation. Joe’s expertise was in bridge and road design, and had served as the quality quality control officer for the new construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge replacement project in Tarrytown.
Princeton U. respected Joe’s ability and not only did he interview prospective students but also mentored many newly certified women engineers. His insight and knowledge of civil engineering was well known and sought after.
Years ago, Joe was a popular bartender for several popular Capital District establishments, and had a following due to his charm, wit and likability.
Joe had lately become a licensed Lay Minister, and married numerous family members and friends.
A total sports fan, Joe always rooted for his New York Yankees, the Ohio State Buckeyes, enjoyed playing handball, softball, golf and others. He loved thoroughbred horse racing, spending summer days at Saratoga Race Track, and getting together with his former classmates and many, many friends.
He loved to travel all over the world, seeing new and exciting places.
To sum up Joe’s life in several words, he LOVED people and was a remarkable and unforgettable man.
Survivors include the love of his life, his adoring wife Helene Welch Izzo, children Cailin (Jon Taisey) Peek and Aaron Peek both of Malta, his loving sister Lucille (Tino) Pallotta of Avon, Ct, and loyal brother Sam (Annette) Izzo of Schenectady, nieces and nephews Meghan (Marc) Russo, Sam (Kim) and Lee (Katie) Pallotta, Jack and Mitch Kowalski, Joseph (Beth) Corbi, David (Janet) Corbi, Jennifer (Patrick) Kane, Rachael Phelan (Joe), Rebecca Phelan (Brendan), Jessica Lyons (Anthony Tessari), Jillian(Mark) and William Lyons along with great nieces and nephews Ava, Veronica, Luke, Piper, Sawyer, Cailin, Peyton, Kaitlin, David, Hannah, Katherine, Megan, and James, cousins and friends.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 7:15 PM at All Saints on the Hudson Church, 121 North Main St., Mechanicville.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society(LLS), 1 Marcus Blvd, Suite 104, Albany, NY 12205.
