MECHANICVILLE - Santina “Sandy” Marzano Johnson, 89, of Pittsburgh Avenue, died peacefully at home, Tuesday June 6, 2017, with her loving sister at her side. Born in Mechanicville on November 21, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Pasquale and Angeline Fondano Marzano.
Sandy worked for many years at Crestline Window Manufacturers in Mechanicville.
A small woman with an amazingly big heart, Sandy gave so much to so many, asking for very little in return. A tremendous cook, her food delighted the stomachs of many families throughout the community. Anyone who had any relationship at all with Sandy reaped the benefits of delicious food, particularly her pizza, chicken cutlets, chicken soup, zucchini omelettes, "little round balls” or just about anything else that came out of her kitchen. She opened her kitchen to anyone at anytime. And saying "no" to her offerings was not an option!
Shortly after the passing of her sister Josie’s husband in 1980, Josie and Sandy lived together, forging an unbreakable relationship for the next 37 years. They took care of each other and over the past few years, Sandy took an increasing role in the care of Josie.
Heartbreakingly in 2008, Sandy faced the loss of her precious nephew, Eric J. Ryan and again in 2016 when she lost her other favorite nephew Jude P. Marzano, both tragically to motor vehicle accidents. The loss of each was a burden she carried every day since. She was also predeceased by her siblings Michalena, Peter(Anna) and Vincent(Philomena) Marzano.
Sandy is survived by her devoted sister, best friend, and roommate Josephine McCormick as well as great nieces and nephews near and far. Valerie Kneeland, David Ryan, and Shawn Ryan, as well as many other family members to whom she has given so much, will miss her tremendously. Neighbors and friends including Linda and Vince Lavazzo, Rex and Judy Wood, Barbara Kennedy, Dee Lombardo, and Steve "across the street" were all very special to Sandy, and the neighborhood will surely never be the same without her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 11AM at All Saints in the Hudson South Church, 121 North Main St., Mechanicville with calling hour prior from 10-11AM, which will also be at the church. Burial alongside her mother and father will follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery. Those wishing to remember Sandy in a special way are asked to make donations to St. Jude Children’sResearch Hospital, 510 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN38105 in her memory.
