MECHANICVILLE - John H. Kipp, 89, of Washington Ave., died Tuesday evening, Sept. 6th at Albany Medical Center, following an extended illness.
A native and lifelong resident, born May 30, 1927, son of the late Raymond and Ethel Bussing Kipp, John was a 1944 graduate of Mechanicville High School, and soon thereafter enlisted and served as a Gunner’s Mate in the US Navy during WWII. While in high school, John helped with his family’s business, Kipp’s Diner, which was sold to the Tancredi family during the war.
After a 42-year career in the banking industry, John retired as Assistant Vice President for the Fleet Bank (former State Bank of Albany) branch in Mechanicville, where he had earlier served as Loan Officer and Business Manager. His career was spent helping people achieve their dreams with the bank's help.
For 24 years, John undertook the responsibility of being the Superintendent of Mechanicville’s City Dock, meeting and greeting thousands of boaters who scheduled their water trips to spend a night or two at the City’s free dockage. John also raised and lowered the American flag every day during that span. In recognition of his volunteer service, the City proclaimed June 15, 2005, as John Kipp Day in the City of Mechanicville.
John was a longtime member of the Mechanicville Lions Club and the Elks Lodge. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a faithful communicant of the Assumption-St. Paul Church.
John was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Mary Hoenig Kipp, who died in 2008, and his sister Betty (Harry) Floud.
Survivors include his son Robert (Donna) Kipp of Berwick, Maine and daughter Patricia (Barry) Thomas of Stillwater. Grandchildren Nancy Kipp (Jeff Dorrance), Dr. Robert Kipp, Jr., Diane (Michael) Kirtoglou and Stephanie Kipp, and cherished great grandchildren Mia and Michael Kirtoglou. Also, sister Diane (Stanley) Hatalsky and brothers Marvin (Clara) Kipp and Douglas (Kay) Kipp, along with nieces, nephews and his faithful canine, Annie.
The Kipp family wishes to thank the AMC staff of D5E and D3N for their special care to John and his family, especially Diane Kirtoglou, Assistant Nurse Manager D5E, and Lisa Schryver, Nurse Manager D5E, for their constant care and support.
The Kipp family also thanks John's many dedicated home-care aides for their on-going assistance in maintaining John's independent living.
