Obituary for William "Huffer" D'Avignon

William "Huffer" D'Avignon
STILLWATER - William “Huffer” D’Avignon, 74, of State Route 32, died peacefully in the comfort of his home on October 8th following a short illness. Born in Mechanicville on August 10, 1944, son of the late William and Mary Roberts D’Avignon, he was a 1964 graduate of Stillwater High School. He joined the US Army after high school and proudly served his country until he was honorably discharged.

Huffer worked for the NYS Department of Transportation in Saratoga Springs for nearly 30 years until his retirement in 1999.

He was most passionate about the time he spent at the training facility of the Saratoga Harness track where he was a horse groomer and exerciser. He loved the horses and worked with them from the time he was a young man.

Huffer was a longtime member of the Stillwater Fire Department and the Stillwater Rescue Squad. In his spare time, he enjoyed trips to Racino with Ruth as well as dinner dates with her, taking rides and trips for ice cream.

He is survived by his loving companion of 50 years, Ruth Figiel, sister Mary Pat(Burton) Parry and her children Bill and Cathy Parry, all of Stillwater, Ruth’s boys; whom he helped raise over the years, Edward(Paula) and Paul(Theresa) Kipp and 4 grand and 11 great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10AM at All Saints on the Hudson North Church, 895 Hudson Avenue, Stillwater, NY 12170 with burial to follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. Calling hours on Thursday from 5-8PM will be held at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 S Main St, Mechanicville, NY 12118.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Pl, Memphis, TN 38105 in memory of William “Huffer”
